He was destined to be the best.

 Introduction.

Growing up in a community full of footballing potentials, the only thing I was destined to become was to be a footballer. I loved playing football. I loved sitting among friends to discuss football players, leagues, and even local players who deserved to be the best among them all. We had Del Piero, Riquelme, Ronaldinho, Kaka, Rivaldo, "the great" Zizou, and a lot more brilliant players from different countries. Within the African continent, we had Kalusha Bwalya, Jayjay Okocha, Nwanko Kanu, Tony Yebaoh, Roger Miller, Patrick Mboma, Samuel Eto, and a lot more.

I could sacrifice my Saturday morning and afternoon classes for football. It was a sport I needed no time to exercise, I needed no time to go for some sprints to build strength, it just came naturally to me. I was so good that my friends would just come to my house even though my dad had that "strict" demeanor, to call me out to go play some matches. They needed their "star player" and the only one who could create chances, dribble, assist, defend, and even in serious situations, score screamers, and goals. I played with my left foot and played as a winger (position no. 11). I saw myself as more of a Maradona than any left-footed player. He was my Idol in the sport.

In the year 2003, I was coming from a Saturday class when I was approached by my very good friend, Shaker. These were his exact words "Vim (my nickie back at Senior High School), have you seen the new chap at Manchester United with his "step-overs" (a name we use for a particular trick in football)? I asked him who was the new "kid" at Manchester United? He said Ronaldo. I asked if R9 (O Fenomono)  has now signed up for Manchester United and he replied, "No, Cristiano Ronaldo".
That was my first time hearing of his name. We had no TV or any cable network to stream football from other sources.

The only option we had was to go to gaming centers to pay and watch football because they had the DSTV decoder. I had the opportunity to watch a Manchester United game and I caught a glimpse of this slim-lanky young boy with a "hungry look" and a powerful right foot moving past defenders, scoring screamers, giving assists, and he was too fast on his feet. During that whole game, I couldn't help but be in awe of Cristiano Ronaldo. In his moments of awesomeness, I knew I had to change careers and rethink about my life choices. I wanted to be a footballer, but I have seen someone who is hungrier than I am. He was playing professionally and in one of the best and toughest leagues in the world. He was scoring goals against David James, Almunia, and the great Petr Cech. Who is this man?

Why is CR7 the best?

I might not have all the details of his personal life but he is a footballer I have followed widely and I have come to admire him because of certain things he does that set him apart from the rest. As a professional, he takes care of his mental health and his body. He told himself "I am the best in the world" and he worked to prove that right. These tenants he upheld and still does, I believe have translated into his successes; dedication, attention to detail, professionalism off and on the pitch, sacrifices, courage to go to different leagues and leave a mark, and above all his mentality "I am the best".

There are a lot of debates and split decisions about who the best in the sport is. Some might choose and say, Roger Miller, Abedi Ayew Pele, JayJay Okocha, Kanu, Pele (Brazil), Maradona, Messi, Zidane, Ronaldinho, R9, Pato, but among all these great players, I will always choose CR7.

With the way, the sport has evolved over these past years, with new rules and regulations involving style of play, offsides, and general gameplay, he has proven to be a master of his craft. He has evolved from playing on the wings (a winger) and taken on a more central role (striker). He has proven himself in almost every league he finds himself whether in the English Premiership, Spanish La Liga, or the Saudi Pro League, he has been voted the Best in the League.

....To me, He is the best!!!...
